Market context: India's shift from clay bricks to concrete masonry (2010) In the late 2000s and early 2010s, India's construction sector entered a sustained growth phase — urban housing, roads, and industrial infrastructure expanded rapidly across Maharashtra and beyond. At the same time, environmental pressure on traditional fired clay bricks intensified, with several states moving to restrict inefficient brick kilns. Concrete hollow blocks (for partition and non-load-bearing walls) and solid blocks (for load-bearing and paving) were becoming the compliant, scalable alternative. Core pain points before the upgrade Capacity ceiling. Our semi-automatic line could not keep pace with tenders from builders and municipalities during the 2010 demand surge. Quality inconsistency. Manual feeding produced solid blocks with variable density and hollow blocks with dimensional drift — rejects were common, and large projects demanded tighter tolerances. Labor dependence. A 10–12 person crew was required per shift, and skilled operators were hard to retain as the industry scaled. Durability concern in Indian conditions. High ambient temperatures, dust, and long operating hours meant many imported and local machines broke down frequently — a critical risk for a growing business.
