Challenge

Market context: Nigeria's building demand and the push for local manufacturing (2016) Across Lagos and the wider Niger Delta, demand for concrete hollow blocks and solid bricks stays strong — driven by housing, commercial estates, and road works. At the same time, the fall in oil prices has pressed the economy, the naira has weakened, and import costs have climbed. Builders and government alike are now looking to replace imported and costly materials with reliable local production. A producer who can supply consistent blocks and bricks at volume, without depending on imported inputs, holds a real edge this year. Core pain points before the upgrade Capacity ceiling. Our older semi-automatic line could not keep pace with the steady stream of orders from Lagos contractors, and we were turning work away during peak building seasons. Heavy labor dependence. Running the old line took a 14-person crew per shift. Finding and managing that many hands — and keeping quality steady across them — was a constant strain. Quality variability. Manual feeding gave us hollow blocks with size drift and bricks with uneven strength. On stricter engineering jobs, rejects and rework ate into our margin. Rising input cost. With the naira soft and imported spares and bought-in stock bricks expensive, every unit we could not make well ourselves was a cost we could ill afford. What we needed was one automatic line that could raise output sharply, cut the crew, and lock in consistent quality — so we could win more local jobs and depend less on imports.

Solution

The Solution: Dongyue QT10-15 Fully Automatic Block Making Machine After comparing several suppliers earlier this year, we chose the QT10-15 — a heavy-duty automatic molding machine built for medium and large plants, able to produce both hollow blocks and solid bricks on one line simply by changing molds. Dongyue's engineers guided the installation and trained our operators on site. The supplied spare-parts list and manuals (in English, with French references for the wider region) mean we can keep the line running without long waits for support.

Results

• More local jobs won. With volume up several-fold, we now accept contracts we used to decline, and deliver on tighter schedules.
• Lower unit cost. Fewer operators and far less scrap mean each block and brick costs us substantially less to make.
• Import substitution. Making our own solid bricks in-house cuts reliance on bought-in stock and on imported inputs — a clear advantage as the naira stays soft.
• Reputation. Consistent size and strength have already brought repeat orders from two Lagos contractors in the first two months.
