How to Choose Brick Machine Molds: A Wrong Mold Can Cost More Than You Saved

Source: Release date: March  01,  2013 View: 1 time

The mold is the most overlooked part of a brick machine. Buyers haggle over machine parameters, price, and brand for weeks, then say one sentence about the mold: just give me the standard one. That habit costs money.

A mold is not a consumable

A mold takes several thousand 15 MPa impacts every day. With weak material or poor heat treatment, scoring, deformation, and chipping show up in under three months. Once the mold loses precision, the bricks drift in dimension.

A real case from 2012. A Myanmar client bought a refurbished mold locally to save money. The set of 6-inch hollow block molds cost RMB 18,000, nearly half the Dongyue price. It ran four months, then the core cracked. The bricks came out with a 5 mm thickness variance between ends, and the site rejected the whole batch.

He came back to Dongyue for a new set. Between the lost production time and the wasted bricks, the savings on the cheap mold did not cover the tip of the loss.

Material decides service life, not just price

Three materials dominate brick machine molds. 45 steel is the cheapest and softest, suited only to small projects with low cement grades. 40Cr is mid-range, with good toughness but average wear resistance. Cr12MoV is the high-end die steel: high hardness, strong wear resistance, and good impact tolerance.

Dongyue molds default to Cr12MoV. A clear data point: on the same QT6-15 under the same material and output, a Cr12MoV mold lasts about 2.3 times as long as a 40Cr mold. The price is higher, roughly RMB 35,000 for a set of 6-inch hollow block molds, but the saved downtime and changeover cost justify it.

Heat treatment you cannot see

The same Cr12MoV processed two different ways produces very different results.

The standard route is carburizing plus low-temperature tempering. Carburizing depth sits at 1.5 to 2.0 mm. Too deep turns the part brittle, too shallow wears out fast. Surface hardness after quenching should land at HRC 58 to 62. Higher chips easily, lower shortens mold life.

Dongyue heat-treats molds in its own workshop rather than outsourcing. This is something many buyers miss, yet it is what keeps mold quality stable batch to batch. Outsourced heat treatment varies: one batch comes out right, the next comes out soft.

Clearance tolerance, the overlooked detail

The fit between mold and mold box is a detail most people ignore.

Too large a gap leaves burrs on the brick and makes demolding hard. Too small a gap drives friction and heat, wearing the mold quickly. Dongyue's standard is a single-side clearance of 0.15 to 0.25 mm, tested against the thermal expansion of Cr12MoV and the 15 MPa forming pressure.

Some cheap molds are cheap precisely because they loosen the tolerance to save machining cost. The gap wears from 0.3 mm to 0.5 mm within months, and the bricks no longer match the original spec.

Common mold maintenance mistakes

●Clean concrete residue off the mold box wall before every mold change. Leftover material accelerates mold wear.

●The core bar wears fastest on a hollow block mold. Keep two spares in stock instead of ordering after one breaks.

●Coat idle molds with rust-proof oil and store them dry. Cr12MoV contains chromium but still rusts under long contact with concrete.

●Do not run one mold set across cement grades that differ a lot. The uneven wear ruins dimensional consistency.

Three questions to ask before buying

If you are unsure, ask the supplier these three questions before you pay:

●What material is the mold, and can you provide a heat treatment test report?

●What single-side clearance tolerance do you hold, and is there a factory inspection record?

●What is the warranty period, and will you replace a mold free of charge for non-human damage within it?

Dongyue molds are all Cr12MoV with in-house heat treatment. Each set ships with a dimensional inspection report and a 12-month warranty. Contact the sales team for specifications.
